The hill on the left bank of the Jizera River was named by our ancestors after the biblical Mount Carmel in Palestine.
A monastery was once situated here. The monastery, founded by the Lords of Michalovice in 1345, was occupied by the Minorite Order. At the end of the 15th century, this site, including the school and printing shop, became the centre for the Bohemian Brethren. Currently Carmel attracts visitors with its modern architecture combined with the sensitive reconstruction of the former monastery buildings and the Church of St. Bonaventura. The new buildings of the Škoda Auto College were completed in 2006.
