Old Town plans indicate that Comenius Square is on the site of the original pond from which water flowed into the stream to Klenice. The old malt brewery (Brewery Street) and nearby meat shops (Meat Street) were dependent on this water.
In the 2nd half of the 19th century, a park was established here, later gradually being surrounded by the new Town Hall building, the original Grammar School, Post Office and Municipal Savings Bank.
Statue of a Legionnaire
After World War I, the statue of a legionnaire was erected in the park on Comenius Square (Komenského náměstí). The statue was created by Josef Matějů in 1923 to commemorate the formation of the Republic by Czechoslovak legions. After the country's occupation by Nazi Germany, the statue was pulled down. After the War, a fragment of the statue was discovered in a Prague landfill. Now the fragment is located in the Under the Tower Gallery (Galerie Pod Věží). A replica of the monument, created by sculptor Michal Moravec from Hořice, is now located on the square.
Military History Museum
In the former bomb shelter located on Comenius Square (Komenského náměstí) there is a permanent exhibition, mainly focused on the history of the 22nd Airborne Brigade 8280 based in Prostějov. The Museum has managed to collect valuable exhibits, especially historical and contemporary uniforms, weapons, badges and other items used by paratroopers.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
The Gothic-style Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was constructed over several decades in the 15th century. However, the vault was completed in 1566 with the financial support of Kateřina Militká, a female burgher of Mladá Boleslav. At the beginning of the 18th century, the building was supplemented by a vestry, a hall and a new Baroque façade by Swiss builder, Nicholas Rossi. The Renaissance-style paintings have been preserved inside the Church. The late Gothic tin font is also valuable. The Baroque sculptures from the workshop of the Jelínek family from Kosmonosy are the highlight of the sculptural decorations.
