Thierry Lauwers, an artist-globetrotter, has already recommended a number of great artists to us. When we wanted to invite someone from outside Europe, he did not disappoint and gave us the contact details of Jorge Schröder from Brazil. Since Thierry had more or less pre-arranged his participation, it was not difficult to gain his acceptance.
Jorge Schröder sent a sketch of his abstract work. The material requirements were fairly simple. We were a bit worried about the spray gun he had requested, because we did not know what type was required. That is why we took the chance to wait for him to arrive, so that he could choose the right one. However, this could have backfired on us.
Just like Thierry Lauwers, Jorge Schröder too is an artist-globetrotter. Just about two months before the Metal Symposium, we learned that he was staying in Germany. He only required some metal sheets for his work. Unfortunately, a mishap occurred on the first day of the Symposium – one of the other participants used one of his metal sheets by mistake. He said modestly that he would simply continue to work with what he had. Just like Risto Immonen, Schröder had a maquette of his statue with him.
One of the funniest memories of the days spent with him is of ordering beer in a restaurant. He was very surprised when he got half a litre of beer instead of one-third of a litre. He learned to like Czech beer immediately and enjoyed it throughout the rest of the week.
His work is a reference to Brazilian architecture and is called the "Orange Cube".
