Before approaching Niklas Fännick, we discussed with David Szalay whether it would be a good idea to have someone working with scrap metal. Although we did not reach an agreement, we decided that the benefits outweighed the possible risks, and so we asked Niklas Fännick to participate. He agreed to take part in the 2014 Metal Symposium.
From the second annual Metal Symposium, we asked each participant to provide us with a sketch of the intended work. Niklas Fännick sent us a sketch where only giraffe outlines and dimensions were visible, so it was impossible to imagine in advance what the work would actually look like and what other components would be needed. On Monday, the first day of the event, we took him to a scrapyard to pick up the materials he needed for his work. Here, he found a piece of metal and was excited by his choice. I admit he was probably the only one who could imagine the future giraffe in this scrap metal. Indeed, as soon as he began to work on the Monday afternoon, a gorgeous giraffe started slowly to emerge. After having consulted about it with his Czech friends, the work was named the "Young Giraffe". The author asked us to coat the statue with zinc before installation. Niklas Fännick is our greatest promoter out of all the former Metal Symposium participants.
During the last day of the event, a lady who worked for the Secondary Technical School suggested that it would be nice to place the giraffe in front of the nearby Zahrada Ecological Centre. Soon afterwards, we approached Jan Cindr, Head of the Mini zoo and botanical garden. He was enthusiastic about the idea and today visitors can enjoy this beautiful work at the entrance to this Mladá Boleslav mini zoo.
