Rik Beuselinck, the creator of the fountain which is installed in front of the Information Centre, recommended Thierry Lauwers to us. Although his website was not sufficiently informative, we followed up Beuselinck's recommendation. Thierry Lauwers agreed to attend the Symposium in 2015. He sent us a design of the intended statue and we were really excited about it. A few days later, he also sent a list of the necessary materials that included, among others, nine tyres. He was going to call his work "Escape".
Our task was to get nine tyres, all of the same dimensions. After he assured us that he did not require new tyres, we turned to car scrapyards and repair shops and, after some time, obtained them. Thierry Lauwers was the first foreign participant to arrive in his own car, even though we had offered him an air ticket. The reason for this was that he wanted to work with his own tools.
His work also conceals a deeper meaning. People are constantly pursuing something and basically the only peaceful time we experience are those nine months before birth. The nine tyres thus represent the nine months of pregnancy. After birth, we are constantly "on the run".
